Vein Treatment Clinical Information

The Venous Institute of Buffalo specializes in all aspects of venous disease treatment, including many common conditions such as varicose veins, spider veins, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and other venous deficiencies.

 Vein Anatomy

Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are dilated, abnormal, superficial veins that have been affected by increased venous pressure.

Due to their proximity to the surface of the skin, varicose veins are visibly enlarged, swollen and twisted. These veins can cause discomfort and pain. They are often characterized by a blue color, but can be accompanied by other discolorations.

Although varicose veins can affect other areas of the body, they are primarily found in the legs.

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) occurs when a blood clot develops within a deep vein, usually of the leg or pelvis. These are not the superficial veins that can be visible beneath the skin, as is the case with varicose veins. Deep veins are larger and located within the muscles.

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is usually the result of an underlying condition or risk factor that causes poor blood circulation, rapid blood clotting, or irritation or inflammation of the inner vein lining.

Spider Veins

Spider veins are very similar to varicose veins. While varicose veins occur in the superficial veins, spider veins actually occur in the capillaries and are much smaller.

Other Venous Insufficiencies

The Venous Institute of Buffalo specializes in all aspects of venous disease treatment, including other venous insufficiencies not described above.

For example, Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI) is a common complication of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). This occurs when the blood clot damages or destroys the valves of the veins. Initially, Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI) causes mild swelling of the skin and soft tissues. Progression of this condition may lead to discolored, thickened, dry, and itchy skin, venous skin ulcers, infections, skin tissue death, and even cancer.
