Gallbladder Problems
No one knows for sure why some people develop gallbladder problems. These problems may be related to how the body handles cholesterol, or problems may result from an infected gallbladder. Gallbladder problems can cause many distressing symptoms such as stomach pain, shoulder pain, back pain, pain under your breastbone, heartburn or an upset stomach.
Gallstones are the most common gallbladder problem. Sometimes there is too much or too little of the bile or other liquid chemicals inside the gallbladder. When this happens, some of the chemicals crystallize and form gallstones.
Treatment for Gallstones and Gallbladder Removal
Your doctor will evaluate your symptoms and medical history and may suggest one or more diagnostic tests such as ultrasound, blood tests, or imaging tests such as CT scans. If your test results indicate that treatment is needed, one of several procedures will be recommended.
- ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography), an endoscopic imaging technique is sometimes used to remove gallstones from the bile duct
- Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy is a less-invasive surgical technique that is performed through several very small incisions.
- Open gallbladder surgery is an inpatient surgical procedure to remove the gallbladder through a large incision in the abdomen.
Hernias
Hernias occur when part of the body bulges into an area where it shouldn't. Most often, this happens when tissues in the abdomen bulge through an opening in the groin.
The type of hernia is dependent upon its location. The most common types of hernias form in the groin, but other types form in the abdomen.
Even though a hernia bulge may suddenly appear, it takes years for a hernia to develop. They grow larger as pressure inside the body presses the intestines or other tissues out through a weak area. With time, these tissues can bulge out beneath the skin of the abdomen.
Laparoscopic Hernia Repair
Your doctor will evaluate your symptoms and physical condition. In some cases imaging tests may be requested. If your exam and test results indicate that surgery is needed, one of several procedures will be recommended.
- Laparoscopic surgery is a less-invasive surgical technique to repair hernias through a very small incision.
- Open hernia surgery is an inpatient surgical procedure that requires a large incision.
